Sommalife
Sommalife connects women farmers directly to buyers through a transparent, tech-enabled supply chain.
Sommalife operates as an agritech social enterprise that leverages its digital platform, TreeSyt, to connect smallholder farmers—primarily women in Northern Ghana—to international markets. At the heart of its mission is a commitment to empowering rural communities while ensuring sustainability and fair participation in global value chains.
The company’s model is anchored on three core pillars. The first is Supply Chain Digitization. Through TreeSyt, Sommalife provides traceability for global buyers, capturing data on production, tree management, and farmer training. This transparency builds trust and ensures that international partners can verify the quality and sustainability of the products they source.
The second pillar is Direct Sourcing and Fair Pay. By bypassing traditional middlemen, Sommalife purchases directly from farmers at their gate. This approach not only reduces inefficiencies but also guarantees better returns for farmers. Currently, the enterprise pays a 22% premium above local market prices, with an ambitious target of reaching 25% by 2028.
The third pillar is Integrated Support Services, which encompasses several initiatives. Under Financial Inclusion, Sommalife provides pre-financing loans for farm operations and household needs, offering flexible in-kind repayment options that ease the burden on farmers. In terms of Value Addition and Training, farmers receive education in sustainable agriculture, financial literacy, and agroforestry, equipping them to meet international quality standards. Finally, through Environmental Stewardship, Sommalife invests in conservation efforts, including reforestation and nurturing over 60,000 shea seedlings, ensuring a long-term, sustainable supply of raw materials while protecting the ecosystem.
